Union Solidarity Requires Safe Spaces for All Educators

We, the members of NEA’s Jewish Affairs Caucus, condemn UTLA’s decision to sponsor an event this coming Monday at Midnight Books (https://www.midnightbooks562.com/) — a venue that openly glorifies terrorism and celebrates figures such as Yahya Sinwar, the chief architect of the October 7 massacre.

Holding a union gathering in a space like this sends a clear message: mainstream Jewish and Israeli educators are not welcome.  At a moment when many Jewish teachers already feel isolated and are faced with increasingly hostile professional climates, this choice deepens division and exclusion rather than fostering solidarity among members.  Unions exist to unite members, protect one another, and ensure every educator feels safe and respected. We should be building bridges across differences — not hosting events in spaces that alienate and harm our colleagues.  We strongly urge UTLA to reconsider its decision and relocate its event to a venue that is welcoming to all.
